Scientists are warning that as global warming melts the icecap, the waste could surface and pollute the environment. Radar observations of the icecap provide a detailed history of ice accumulation and erosion associated with climate change. The southern icecap recedes during this season (but doesn"t fully disappear like the north pole, which nearly does). The northern icecap has been shrinking since the 1970s, with global warming driving the loss of about three-quarters of its volume so far. Scientists believe this chasm predates the existence of the modern polar icecap and has likely grown deeper as new ice deposits have grown up around it. The white areas of this image are this residual dry icecap while the darker parts are water ice with dust and particles trapped in it. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
